NAIDOC Week 2016: community event in Harmony Square – Dandenong

Come along to a fun-filled community and Council event to celebrate NAIDOC Week in the City of Greater Dandenong.

Activities will include an official opening by Mayor, Heang Tak, alongside a local community Elder and also include three young Aboriginal people who’ll be acting as MCs.

Performances by an Indigenous Hip Hop group and Jindi Worabak Dancers, broadcasting live on the big screen, as well as crowd participation in the workshops and other fun activities.

When:  Monday, 4 July 2016, 1:30 – 3:30 PM

Nominations now open for 2016 Victorian Aboriginal Honour Roll

Victorian_Aboriginal_Honour_RollEach year the Victorian Aboriginal Honour Roll acknowledges and celebrates the wide-ranging achievement of Aboriginal people past and present.

In its first five years, 79 people have been inducted in recognition of their outstanding achievements in social, cultural, economic and community leadership and impact. Their life stories are presented in the Honour Roll book which is on permanent display in the Victorian Parliament.

Nominating will recognise and celebrate Aboriginal community heroes and show support for this important initiative.

Weekly Koorie Youth program – Doveton

The Inspired Youth Group is a Koorie Youth Program for young people aged 10-25 years. 

The weekly meetings provide a platform for participants to learn new skills, meet new people, connect with culture and most importantly – have fun. It’s run by the Dandenong & District Aborigines Co-operative Limited with support from the City of Greater Dandenong and the City of Casey. 

When:  every Monday during school term, from 4:00 – 6:30 PM
Where:  The Gathering Place, 20 Agonis Street, Doveton, Vic 3177

Inspired is an acronym that stands for Indigenous; First Nationals; Spiritual; Proud; Involved; Respectful; Equal; and Deadly.

Come along to the Homework Centre at the Casey Aboriginal Gathering Place where you can access computers, tutors and a supportive group environment.

When:  every Wednesday during school term, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM

Aboriginal women’s group Dandenong: healthy relationships group

The Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency is running women’s groups with a focus on healthy relationships. The groups are being run in Dandenong every Tuesday.

When: every Tuesday, except school holidays from 5:30 – 7:30 PM
